Updated Torticollis Grades

In the Torticollis evaluation section, the existing torticollis grades have been updated and an additional Grade 8 has been added based on the new APTA guidelines. 

  • Grade 1 - Early Mild: Presents between 0 and 6 months of age with only postural preference or a difference between sides in passive cervical rotation of less than 15 degrees.
  • Grade 2 - Early Moderate: Presents between 0 and 6 months of age with a difference between sides in passive cervical rotation of 15 to 30 degrees.
  • Grade 3 - Early Severe: Presents between 0 and 6 months of age with a difference between sides in passive cervical rotation of more than 30 degrees or an SCM mass.
  • Grade 4 - Later Mild: Presents between 7 and 9 months of age with only postural preference or a difference between sides in passive cervical rotation of less than 15 degrees.
  • Grade 5 - Later Moderate: Presents between 10 and 12 months of age with only postural preference or a difference between sides in passive cervical rotation of less than 15 degrees.
  • Grade 6 - Later Severe: Presents between 7 and 9 months of age with a difference between sides in passive cervical rotation of more than 15 degrees, or between 10 and 12 months of age with a difference of 15 to 30 degrees.
  • Grade 7 - Later Extreme: Presents between 7 and 12 months of age with an SCM mass, or between 10 and 12 months of age with a difference between sides in passive cervical rotation of more than 30 degrees.
  • Grade 8 - Very Late: Presents after 12 months of age with any asymmetry, including postural preference, any difference between sides in passive cervical rotation, or an SCM mass.
